Campus life at UMass Lowell offers many choices to students. Opportunities to attend
concerts, socials, and educational lectures are constantly available to Navitas students
on the UMass Lowell campus.

Life on campus

Academic and leadership opportunities

There are many opportunities to participate in hall government, the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and related activities. In addition to the social activities, there are career development and academic success programs sponsored in the halls programs. Residence Life Advisors help organize numerous events such as Movies that Rock Nights, Jeopardy Nights, Comedy Shows, Open Mic Nights, Acoustic Nights and a Concert Series.

Recreation and exercise options

The 65,000 square foot Campus Recreation Center (CRC) at UMass Lowell is a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet the needs of the UMass Lowell campus community. CRC includes the following:

  • LifeFitness, Precor, Cybex, and Concept II cardiovascular equipment
  • Three multipurpose courts used for basketball, volleyball and badminton. They are also used for intramural sports
  • Two multipurpose studios for aerobic-based classes such as zumba, kickboxing, yoga, and Pilates.
  • 1/10-mile running track used for walking and running
  • Two racquetball courts and 1 squash court
  • Locker rooms with showers and saunas
  • Pool tables
  • Ping pong tables
  • Bicycle shop
  • Outdoor adventure trips
  • Personal training
  • Kayaking lessons

Student clubs

UMass Lowell has over 100 student clubs and organizations to suit all interests. If no group that matches your interests currently exists, it is very easy to organize a new one. To search a list of all current student organizations, visit uml.edu/student-services/student_activities/default.html.

Friends and memories

Fox Common on East Campus, McGauvran Student Center on the UMass Lowell South Campus and Southwick Lounge on the North Campus are all great places to hang out and meet people. There are big screen TVs, pool tables, foosball tables and email stations. Both venues offer plenty of room to relax or do some studying. The McGauvran Student Center also houses club offices, the Activities Commission, Sojourn Yearbook, Student Government and The Connector, the student newspaper.

City life

As a UMass Lowell student, you can enjoy the outdoor cafés, nightclubs and restaurants Lowell has to offer. A thriving local arts scene, a world-class entertainment complex that attracts top-name performers and a National Park also create wonderful recreational opportunities for our students.

Public transportation

The Lowell Regional Transit Authority (LRTA) provides a public bus service to campus, originating at the Kennedy Bus Transfer Station at the Gallagher Intermodal Transportation Center. The MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority) provides a commuter rail service from Lowell to Boston, New York and beyond, seven days a week from the Gallagher Center. Lowell is only 30 minutes from the heart of Boston and 4 hours from New York City.
